The sunny and cool day offered us an opportunity to explore the Minesing Wetlands, along Willow Creek just northwest of Snow Valley. Nick helped Mom and me get mom’s canoe on and off the car and in and out of the water where we all enjoyed a peaceful paddle along the high waters of the fast moving channel. The Nottawasaga Conservation Authority is doing a fabulous job maintaining and enhancing this area for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy. We saw riverbanks protected by what appeared to be old Christmas tree carcasses – what an innovative idea! Also hundreds of saplings planted along the banks to help prevent erosion and provide habits for the thousands of birds who call the wetlands home for the season. Nick decided to open swimming season with a chilling dip in the creek that momentarily took his breath away! On the drive home we stopped in to chat with Farmer Morris who took the time from his busy day (thanks Morris!) to tour us around the farm showing Mom and me what he has newly planted as well as the progress of the new apple orchard he has planted over the last few years. This should be the first year of a significant apple crop from Barrie Hill Farms! We left the farm with fresh asparagus to satisfy the appetite we had worked up paddling. We are so fortunate to live in an area that sustains such diverse wildlife and productive farming for our minds and bodies to thrive on. Spring is here!
