Every year, on or near Dec 1, the five of us get together to hoist a pint in honour of our old buddy, Matt Wilson, who died way too young, sixteen years ago. (The fifth person is Jim de los Rios, who joined us on WhatsApp). These pub nights are usually full of laughs and lots of bullshitting and old stories of the memorable times we had altogether with Matt – or just plain poking fun at Matt and each other.
At a bare minimum, even if we don’t mention Matt in our discussion, the anniversary of losing our buddy ensures that there is at least one evening a year that we will take a break from our busy lives to all get together and reconnect. It is a reminder for us how good it is to have such great long term friendships that seem to get more precious with age.
