I wish that I felt “fresh and relevant as ever” when I was 40 years old, let alone 53. This album has left an indelible mark on my formative years and beyond. When Joe Strummer died in 2002, a very musical buddy of mine, left a message on our answering machine tape recording Death or Glory in its entirety complete with distorted electric guitar thrashing to his angry and sorrowful vocal tribute to Joe Strummer. Sadly, Matt died a year after recording that. I wish I’d kept that cassette; it could’ve been a sonic artifact remaining for decades much like the millions of pressed vinyl platters that are London Calling still exist in basements and garages around the globe. And today as I pen these memories, this iconic album’s tracks stream note for note on a digital river to my ears. I just may listen to it again before the day’s out.
