Meaford Mixed Roads 2023

I was so happy to see four other riders at Meridian Place for the start! I hadn’t heard from any interested riders prior to last Sunday’s departure for Meaford; I figured people had other plans for the long weekend. Scott, Chris, Dan and Steve rolled out of Barrie with me where we picked up Chris…

Wasaga Won Hundred 2023

a small group of six left from downtown with another rider joining us as we head north out of Barrie. it was exciting to begin this first fondo of the 2W2N series with a strong group. wonderful to see some faces for the first time in months! a couple of early punctures (and a third…

chill

feeling like a head cold headcase, I figured I’d roll down to enjoy the Bay before dark. rolling along the waterfront brought me to a surprise meeting with Rita and Pete, old friends who feel more like siblings than friends. we strolled together for a while enjoying the Sunset and catching up a little. the…

Instant Summer

we went from riding with full winter gear last weekend to summer kit and tan lines in the span of two days. What an absolutely bonus stretch of weather! I even had my first Rip n Dip of the year, yesterday. after getting out of the frigid Bay to warm myself in the evening rays,…

the sea refuses no river ~ p. townshend

a forecast of 12c and Sunshine was impossible to resist, even with the 25 kph West wind. heading out of Barrie, I chose a destination of Wasaga Beach so that I’d have that West wind on my tail the whole way home! riding through the Minesing Wetlands between Minesing and Wasaga Beach offered me some…

old man, Young Shuffle

a chilly half inspired by Cliff Young and Angus Young :: I worked late coming home under a beautiful evening Sun, still hanging high above the horizon in a Bluebird sky after implementing Daylight Savings Time last Sunday. A nice benefit of an arguably useless practice. Instead of eating dinner, I decided to get out…

Harrison’s first stop in Barrie

Rachel, Luke and Harrison (plus Beau and Indy) came North for a visit in late February. Spending time with aunts and uncles, nieces, grandparents and great grandparents, was so neat to see. Special moments scattered throughout the weekend. Hopefully the first of many visits!

Winter’s arrival

after an unseasonable January, Winter’s arrival is over a month late. honestly, this is the first year that I truly haven’t missed it’s arrival, but now that it’s here I’ll get out there and enjoy it on my various foot-fitted hardware. Spring is less than two months away!

shattered

last week while walking home from work, I saw an interesting dumpster full of shattered glass. today while riding, I saw Lake Simcoe full of shattered ice. can you tell which is which?

Harrison Eric Kilroy

Born: January 2, 2022 ~ London Ontario Just before the New Year, Chris and I headed to London for Harrison’s birthday, scheduled for January 1st. That’s the day Rachel would be ten days past due; the latest your typical OB would tolerate. We spent a very quiet New Year’s Eve, hanging around the house relaxing…

giving all you can

I donate blood every fifty-six days, always booking my next date on each visit. I’m very grateful that I remain healthy and physically able to do this, since I know there is always a need. I’ve done these regular donations for many, many years now, but recently the pandemic has disrupted this and only very…

bombogenesis

noun METEOROLOGY A phenomenon or process in which there is rapid and sustained falling of barometric pressure in the center of a low-pressure system, indicative of its strengthening into a powerful storm. As in: “the storm will intensify rapidly, so quickly, in fact, that it will likely undergo bombogenesis” In recent media, I’ve heard reference to “bomb cyclone”. Thinking…

Worstenbroodjes

Ever since I was a young boy, baking this traditional Dutch Christmas treat has been a fun, family experience. It’s a lot of busy work but a lot of fun, with everyone chipping in to do their part in the production process. This year, Mikayla had her first experience helping us make the dough and…

November Nights

When November rolls around and daylight become scarse, my Sun sightings decrease in frequency and the Moon becomes a bigger part of my celestial sightings. Here are a few sights I captured while out on my two-wheeler this month.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” ~ Albert Einstein

Riding today with my friend, Joe, for the first time in a long time, from Orangeville through the Hockley Valley, Palgrave, Caledon and the Forks of the Credit definitely helps me keep balance in my life. Thanks for keeping me moving, Joe!

I’m always getting excited for a ride! This biking season has been great, so far. All of the Two Wheels to Nowhere fondo rides I planned this year have been successful! Well attended with excellent riders, great weather, fun adventures and safe rides all around. I’m still excited for the Algonquin Gates Ride this week…

McMaster (and sometimes his brother Trent) is master of his domain on his human’s bike. Heather takes him out daily for a ride which includes a mid-ride run on a trail near Creemore. Lucky dog. footnote: We had passed Heather and McMaster twice on our bikes while riding near Creemore, and each time we commented,…

Longer Days ~ When I go to visit Mom on Mondays now, the Sun is still shining into her suite as we sat there watching M*A*S*H and having a laugh together. This evening, the Sun cast a very warm light on Mom’s face (despite the bitter cold wind outside) as she sat enjoying a glass…

blithe–spirit: Inventor Benjamin Bowden displays his Spacelander bicycle, “the cycle of the future”, London, September 1946. The Spacelander eventually went into production in the USA in 1960. Despite its gorgeous design the bike was not a success, and only 522 were shipped at $89.50 (expensive). There are, apparently, 38 Spacelanders left in the world, 17…
