trains

like many young boys, I was fascinated with trains and railway tracks at an early age and I still am to this day in the same marvelous way. a few years ago, Chris and I watched Hell on Wheels a gritty drama series built around the construction of the transnational railway shortly after the Civil War in America. railways built with blood, sweat and tears finally connected East to West the foundation for explosive industrial development, migration and growth as America rolled into the twentieth century. and now, 175 years later, we are tearing out railways turning them into greenways and rail trails when more than ever in North America, while the growing number of diesel trucks on the roads contribute to the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. crazy, really. it’ll be interesting to see how railways evolve in the coming decades. we’ll either end up with more greenways to ride bikes on or more green ways to transport people and freight on steel wheels.
