Dylan’s record-setting ride across Ontario

I was honoured when Dylan asked me to officiate for his WUCA Across Ontario E-W record attempt from Ottawa to Windsor. Dylan asking me to help was an exciting prospect for me to hang with three other cycling friends all weekend to support Dylan’s ambitious attempt to break a record set in 2009 by Ross Rader, from Toronto, who completed the 810 kilometres in 34h 57m. Dylan’s goal was 30 hours.

Rob S and Victor C provided support while Bryson G and I were the WUCA officials having successfully completed a rigorous qualifying test. truth is, all four of us supported and tracked Dylan’s progress for over 31 hours straight. we drank coffees and RedBull to stay alert while Dylan did the hard work pedaling into a steady West wind for the whole ride, overcoming severe nausea and vomiting seven hours in only to carry on to finish with remarkable determination and grit. along the way he endured fog, night, ignorant drivers, heat and one flat tire. a truly Herculean effort.

spending 31 hours straight in the car with the three younger lads was a real blast, despite the lack of any sleep! we had lots of laughs and chatter all around our common interest in cycling. it made me feel 29 again…

Dylan arrived in Windsor in record time: 31 hours, 40 minutes. he now officially holds the World Ultra Cycling Association record! more importantly, Dylan is proof that with a strong will, a determined mindset, and impressive physical fitness, one can achieve incredible results. he also has succeeded Riding Beyond Limits, raising awareness and funds for CMHA who help those struggling with their mental health.
