despite one country laying below sea level and the other in the high and dry desert, both cities need to manage the risks of destructive water. both need to manage moving masses of people around the city. I find it interesting how solutions to those challenges manifest so differently in these contrasting cities. this year, I’ve had the opportunity to experience both cities close up and personal, on multiple occasions. it’s interesting how a city built on and for the human scale (that is, for the scale of a human body) is one that feels more inviting, fosters more social interaction, encourages active transportation, relaxes the soul, and is more aesthetically appealing. a city build on the scale of the automobile simply cannot compare. I can only imagine the contrasting effects on mental health the two environments have. having walked these cities in person and now looking at these photos, I don’t have to imagine…
